Gibson Grove Project Summary

Demolition and Stabilization; Mitigation Waters of the U.S.; New Construction and Restoration of Historic Gibson Grove church.

Gibson Grove AME Zion Church is more than 100 years old and held the second oldest congregation in the Cabin John community.  It is the only remaining post slavery structure associated with the African American Gibson Grove community in the 1880s. In 1961 it was listed in the Montgomery County Master Plan for Historic Preservation.  It also qualifies for listing in the National Register under Criterion A and Criterion Consideration A.

This project will face multiple phases: Phase 1 is Demolition and

Stabilization; Phase 2 - Restoration and New Construction.
Project History:

In  2002 the property was assigned to First Agape AME Zion Church for full renovation. After the renovation completed in 2003, a four alarm fire heavily damaged the historic church in 2004. In 2006, First Agape AMEZ became owner of the Gibson Grove Historic Property and began to draft plans for restoration & reconstruction of the property with the Montgomery County Historic Commission. These plans were approved in 2015. Shortly after a fallen tree destroyed 75% of the remaining structure. In 2020 the work permit for stabilization Plan was approved.
